Hurricane Sandy

This week was the seventh year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. Do you remember it? Because I definitely do. The United States encountered a deadly storm that led to billions of dollars worth of destruction and many lives lost in late October of 2012.  That storm, Hurricane Sandy. In the United States, Hurricane Sandy affected 24 states. Eight million people were left without electrical power and tens of thousands were trapped in New York City public housing without light, heat, water, elevators or telephones to communicate with the outside. What made it worse is that a nor'easter storm came a couple days after sandy which consisted of wind, rain and snow that knocked out power to many more Northeast residents who'd only recently gotten it back after super storm Sandy battered the region. Throughout the storm we all tried to help one another with whatever we could, that being giving each other something to eat, clothes to keep warm or even a place to stay. This was a moment of disparity where we had to help one another to survive for the next few days until the following weeks. I remember being without power for almost a whole month. I regained power a couple of days prior to thanksgiving. Although my house did not get affected as much because I live on a hill, I cant say the same about my neighbors. I live in Massapequa, NY a block away from the water. Luckily we didn’t suffer anything major besides a power outage, this caused us to not have heat. A plus for me, I had a fireplace. I invited some of our neighbors over the house since they were left without anything and their house had severe water damage. I remember the whole thing like it was yesterday. This was a time for people to support each other despise of any problems that we have had. I remember seeing boats and jet skis on my front lawn. Trees were down all over the place. Cars were submerged under water. This was not a pretty sight. Before the hurricane, the news was advising people to evacuate but they did not listen. Hurricane Sandy caused 147 deaths. People lost their homes, their properties, their assets and sadly some lost friends and relatives. We have to remember that when you are at the end of the rope, tie a knot and hold on to it. Image result for hurricane sandyImage result for hurricane sandy

  1. What a powerful last sentence! Yes, I remember it as if it were yesterday too. We were only without electricity for 5 days in Massapequa, but we live north of Sunrise. My cousins lived south of Merrick Rd, and had the water in their poor, the lower level pf their house, etc.
