You're One In a Million

This past weekend has been filled with nothing but laughs, excitement, good food, good friends and family, and of course, a  big surprise! On Sunday, 09/15/2019 we all gathered to celebrate my soon-to-be mother in law's 60th birthday. One year ago today we went all the way out to Laurel, Long Island and celebrated her 59th birthday at a winery called Clovis Point. My soon to be mother in law, Maria, mentioned that she wished to celebrate her 60th birthday party at the same location. Since she has never had a surprise birthday party, this would've been the perfect time for us to throw her one. My fiancées ended up calling all her friends to tell them what we had in mind and they agreed to help out and be a part of the celebration. Since they have been best friends for over 40 years, she would be totally shocked when the time came.

And she was! When we went in, everyone was there with open arms celebrating her arrival. Total shock, amusement, and tears of joy were shed due to the unexpected surprise. The rest of the day was spent by enjoying eachother's company while sipping on great wine.

Today is her actual birthday. We woke up, had amazing brunch at Maureen's Kitchen and celebrated the rest of her birthday with my fiancées grandmother who is 89 and suffering from dementia. "You're one in a million!" has always been a saying that her mother has told her and it is very sentimental to her. And lastly, we ended off the day by blowing out birthday candles for the third time this weekend wishing nothing for the best with good fortune and prosperity for the year ahead.

  1. I think this entry is great and has all the important parts. It is good that you have a sweet mother-in-law, and I like the way that you included the video so that after reading about her and the party, we could actually see the exciting moment.

In the grammar point, you could add just a quick explanation of present tense forms and how we would change the past back to the present. Or actually you use the present perfect "has never had " and "has always been," so that might be a better topic for grammar based on your writing -- has + past participle form of the verb .

  4. Hi Jerry! Your blog post is so nice. The writing assignment is great since kids like talking about the holidays. Just in case, though, maybe give them the option of being able to talk about their friends too in case you have students who have divorced parents or are in foster homes. Not all students celebrate the holidays with their families, so by them having the option to talk about their friends might make them feel more comfortable.
